Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. Why I Am Waiting

I am waiting because of two hardcore awesome women. Leigh Bardugo and  Gal Gadot aka Wonder Woman. I’ve never been much into DC heroes, I’m a Marvel girl and Black Widow has my heart. But after seeing Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman this summer I just want, no NEED, more Wonder Woman! I pre ordered this book before I even left the theater I kid you not. I can not wait, AND it’s being written by LEIGH BARDUGO herself, aka the genius behind Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom! Thats a good enough reason alone to be waiting. Warbring is also the first in the DC Icons series with sequels being written by more of my favorite authors like Marie Lu and Sarah J. Maas! Bring it on!

Waiting on Wednesday – A Map for Wrecked Girls

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I am waiting on A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor

Expected publication: August 15th 2017 by Dial Books

a-map-for-wrecked-girls-jessica-taylorWe sat at the edge of the ocean—my sister Henri and I—inches apart but not touching at all. We’d been so sure someone would find us by now.

Emma had always orbited Henri, her fierce, magnetic queen bee of an older sister, and the two had always been best friends. Until something happened that wrecked them.

I’d trusted Henri more than I’d trusted myself. Wherever she told me to go, I’d follow.

Then the unthinkable occurs—a watery nightmare off the dazzling coast. The girls wash up on shore, stranded. Their only companion is Alex, a troubled boy agonizing over his own secrets. Trapped in this gorgeous hell, Emma and Alex fall together as Emma and Henri fall catastrophically apart.

For the first time, I was afraid we’d die on this shore.

To find their way home, the sisters must find their way back to each other. But there’s no map for this—or anything. Can they survive the unearthing of the past and the upheaval of the present? (goodreads summary)

Why I am Waiting

I am currently watching Lost for the first time on Netflix with Husband. That being said I am loving the shipwrecked/crazy island/lost themed books that are coming out. I just read The Sandcastle Empire last month and am really looking forward to this one. This book looks like it will have a sister dynamic to it. I always find sister books fascinating (I grew up with a younger brother) their relationships are something I will never experience, hopefully just like being lost on an island! It sounds like a great read to end the summer with and I’m looking forward to it!

Geekerella – Book Review

Author: Ashely Posten
Published: April 4th 2017 by Quirk Books
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Retelling
Rating: ★★★★★

geekerella-book-coverAnything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. (Goodreads summary)

“My dad said that the impossible is only impossible if you don’t even try. So I want to try.”

This book was so much fun! It is the ultimate geek girl meets fairytale retelling. I am a sucker for a cinderella story, add in nerdy fandoms and its a dream come true!

Danielle Whittimer is a classic cinderella. Her father has died leaving her with her annoyingly awful Stepmother Catherine and her equally terrible stepsisters Chloe and Calliope in good old Charleston, South Carolina. Her days are spent doing what Catherine tell her to do and working at the awful vegan food truck The Magic Pumpkin (ya see what she did there?!). Elle is very very into Starfield. She and her late father would watch the show together when she was growing up. Her father loved Starfield and cosplay so much that he founded a con called ExcelsiCon. Elle stopped going to ExcelsiCon after her dad died, her stepmother hates all things nerd. But this year there is a cash prize for winning the cosplay contest. Elle could really use that cash to finally escape from her stepfamily.

Darien Freeman is a Prince. Well.. he plays one in the new Starfield reboot. But getting to be the character of his dreams isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Footage of filming keeps getting leaked, die hard fans don’t think he can pull of playing such an esteemed character and he just found out his dad/agent is forcing him to appear on a panel  at ExcelsiCon – the last place he want to be. The only bright spot in his days is getting to text the stranger from the convention directors office. Elle.

I loved both of these characters. I loved the con. I loved Elle’s budding friendship with Sage her coworker at the magic pumpkin. I loved Franko the weenie dog. I loved the ending that we all know and love and I love how it was presented in such a dorky way. This book is a love letter to all the nerds and geeks and dreamers. This was a cute and easy read and I highly recommend it! signature-1

Our Dark Duet – Book Review

Author: Victoria Schwab
Published: June 13th 2017 by Greenwillow Books
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Monsters
Rating: ★★★★✰

THE WORLD IS BREAKING. AND SO ARE THEY.OurDarkDuet
KATE HARKER isn’t afraid of monsters. She hunts them. And she’s good at it.

AUGUST FLYNN once yearned to be human. He has a part to play. And he will play it, no matter the cost.

THE WAR HAS BEGUN.

THE MONSTERS ARE WINNING.

Kate will have to return to Verity. August will have to let her back in. And a new monster is waiting—one that feeds on chaos and brings out its victims’ inner demons.

Which will be harder to conquer: the monsters they face, or the monsters within?

“Monsters,” he said slowly, “all want the same thing: to feed. They are united by that common goal, while you are all divided by your morals and your pride. What do I think? I think that if you cannot come together, you cannot win.”

I loved This Savage Song. It was the first Victoria Schwab book I had ever read and I knew before I even finished that I had to read her other works. The way she write is just amazing. And the way, the style in which she wrote this beautiful soul crushing book was just perfect. She definitely is not afraid to mess with our feelings and strike right for the feels. Our Dark Duet picks up a few months after the ending of This Savage Song. Kate is now living in Prosperity hunting the few monsters that are there. August has stayed behind to take Leo’s place in the Flynn Task Force with his dead brother haunting his thoughts. While hunting monsters Kate comes across a monster no one has ever seen before. Not a Malchai, Corsai, or a Sunai, but something else entirely. She tracks it back to Verity. And thats where things really start getting good. or really bad. depending upon how you look at it.

August Flynn. He is an amazingly well rounded character. A monster that only wants to be human forced to do monstrous things to save humans. He is seriously messed up in this book. Killing his brother and Kate leaving and the city going to hell in a hand basket and having to reap more and more souls is just taking its toll on him. He struggles with what to do, hearing Leo’s voice in his head telling him to let go and let the monster loose but not wanting to lose what little “humanity” he has.

Kate Harker. I love my blondies. There really aren’t that many out there so I am biased towards them. Kate has started over, she has a new name and a new identity. She tries to cover up her pain and loneliness with monster hunting. She meets new friends  colleagues  fellow monster hunters in Prosperity and fills her life with that. All in, the only way Kate knows how to. But Verity is always in the back of her mind.

I don’t feel like I can say much more without spoiling. The book starts out a bit slow but then as soon as it picks up you are hurled full force into that heart wrenching ending. Oh that ending. I have to say I knew part of it was coming but that still doesn’t prepare you for it! Ugh. I loved it though, I don’t know how she could have ended it any better while getting the point across.

“People were messy. They were defined not only by what they’d done, but by what they would have done, under different circumstances, molded as much by their regrets as their actions, choices they stood by and those they wished they could undo. Of course, there was no going back—time only moved forward—but people could change.
For worse.
And for better.”
